Gary Numan

De Engelse muzikant Gary Numan geldt als een van de pioniers van elektronische muziek. Eind jaren zeventig brak hij door als frontman van Tubeway Army. Kort daarna startte Numan zijn solocarrière en bracht hij het album The Pleasure Principle uit, met daarop de internationale hit Cars. Zijn muziek kenmerkt zich door prominente synthesizers, donkere futuristische thema’s en een koele, androgyne podiumstijl. Daarmee had hij grote invloed op de ontwikkeling van synthpop en elektronische muziek.

Hoewel zijn grootste commerciële succes in de late jaren zeventig en vroege jaren tachtig lag, blijft de invloed van Gary Numan tot op de dag van vandaag hoorbaar. Zijn muziek leeft voort in tal van samples: zo scoorden acts als Basement Jaxx (met ‘Where’s Your Head At’), Armand van Helden (met ‘Koochy’) en Sugababes (met ‘Freak Like Me’) grote hits waarin elementen uit Numans werk zijn verwerkt. Ook veel artiesten noemen hem als belangrijke inspiratiebron. Onder anderen Nine Inch Nails, Blur en Foo Fighters verwijzen naar Numan als invloed. Zelfs Prince sprak zijn bewondering uit en zei: “There are still people trying to work out what a genius Gary Numan is.”

Na Numan's laatste optreden in Amsterdam op Dekmantel Festival in 2023 keert Gary Numan terug naar Nederland voor een concert in de Grote Zaal van Paradiso.

The English musician Gary Numan is considered one of the pioneers of electronic music. In the late 1970s he rose to fame as the frontman of Tubeway Army. Shortly afterward, Numan began his solo career and released the album The Pleasure Principle, which featured the international hit Cars. His music is characterized by prominent synthesizers, dark futuristic themes, and a cool, androgynous stage style. With this sound, he had a major influence on the development of synthpop and electronic music.

Although his greatest commercial success came in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Gary Numan’s influence can still be heard today. His music lives on through numerous samples: acts such as Basement Jaxx (with Where’s Your Head At), Armand van Helden (with Koochy), and Sugababes (with Freak Like Me) scored major hits incorporating elements from Numan’s work. Many artists also cite him as an important inspiration. Among others, Nine Inch Nails, Blur, and Foo Fighters have referenced Numan as an influence. Even Prince expressed his admiration, saying: “There are still people trying to work out what a genius Gary Numan is.”

After Numan’s last performance in Amsterdam at Dekmantel Festival in 2023, Gary Numan returns to the Netherlands for a concert in the main hall of Paradiso.
